A friend just asked me why child trafficking matters to me. Firstly, I don't know how it can NOT matter to any of us. But secondly, it matters because it doesn't just happen to kids in other countries. It could happen to a child I love, right here at home. And the key to making it stop is education.
Anyone who's read me for any time knows that I am the child of alcoholic narcissists. And there's been a TON of work to do to heal the wounds from what happened to me as a child. But when I think about being kidnapped and sold into sex slavery? I can't help but think that what happened to me was a cake walk.
I also believe, wholly, that the future of our world in in our children. So I'm pretty sappy when it comes to charities that help kids--and especially at-risk kids.
Born2Fly.org reminds me that, with regard to trafficking, ALL kids are at-risk. And so supporting them is absolutely something I very much want to put my time and energy and attention behind.
Their site starts by saying this:
"Most kids are lured into sex slavery because they don’t know the deceptive tactics of traffickers. Wherever awareness training takes place, the rate of trafficking plummets. There’s just not enough, nor is it available in the languages of most at-risk kids." -- Born2Fly.org
Today, 10.10.10, the amazing Diana Scimone is doing an incredibly big, lavishly loving thing by trying to get 10K people to donate $10 each to stop child trafficking. Just $10. Surely you have that. Or consider $10 for each of your children. Or $10 for every child you personally have a relationship with. Or just give everything you can. It's tax deductible (in case that matters to you).
